Kaede Honjou is a high school girl who loves video games. She is so good at them that she is known as the "BOFURI" (literally "no pain, no gain") among her friends. One day, she is invited to play a new VRMMO game called "New World Online" by her friend Risa Shirogane. Kaede decides to create a character named Maple, and she chooses to max out her defense stats so that she can avoid taking damage. Maple quickly becomes a powerful player in New World Online, but she is also very clumsy and often gets into trouble. She befriends a powerful dragon named Sally, and the two of them go on many adventures together. One day, Maple and Sally are challenged to a duel by a group of players who are jealous of Maple's strength. Maple is defeated, but she learns a valuable lesson about the importance of teamwork. She then joins forces with Sally and her other friends to form a guild called "Maple Tree". Maple Tree quickly becomes one of the most powerful guilds in New World Online, and Maple herself becomes a legendary player known for her unique playstyle and her powerful defense. She continues to have many adventures, and she always learns and grows
