Jim Crow
Jim Crow is a racist depiction of African-Americans and their culture. The character was created by Thomas D. Rice in the 1820s and was based on a folk trickster named Jim Crow. Rice also adapted and popularized a traditional slave song called "Jump Jim Crow". The character typically dresses in rags and wears a bed hat and torn shoes. Rice applied blackface makeup made of burnt cork to his face and hands and impersonated a very nimble and irreverently witty African-American field-hand.

Zwarte Piet, also known as Black Pete, is the companion of Saint Nicholas in the folklore of the Low Countries. He is typically depicted as a black Moor from Spain, and those portraying the traditional version of the character usually put on blackface and colourful Renaissance attire in addition to curly wigs and bright red lipstick. However, the character has become increasingly controversial in recent years, and a revised version, dubbed Sooty Piet, has become more common at public events. Sooty Piet features the natural skin tone of the actors playing the character with soot marks created by streaks of dark makeup on their faces.
